Joe Sports - Blogs about the RiverKings in the Central Hockey League and the hockey world.
Hey, y’all! I’ll be gone for the next two weeks. I did not die. I am alive. I am on vacation and I am without satellite, television or even a fully functional cell signal. Right now I am typing in this entry from a Burger King parking lot.
Seems like forever since the playoffs and I don't know about you, but I can't wait for RiverKings 2009/2010 hockey season to start.October where are you?
The Kings organization had absolutely an amazing season. Can we make it two in a row and cap it off with the Presidents Cup?
So let's look to this upcoming year. What exactly do we have to look forward to? We've got some great hockey players on this team. We've got players who have proven to themselves that they can do it.
We have a coach who has signed a three year deal. That is great news for RiverKing fans. Some changes will come, but I believe the changes Kaminski makes will better the team. Let's wait and see.
Let's look at the NHL Playoffs.
If you do not like the Stanley Cup playoffs then you are not a true sports fan....period.
It seems like weeks, doesn’t it, since the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals battled in a thrilling playoff series.? The conference finals, by comparison, have been DULL, DULL DULL.
The stars, make that superstars on the Penguins and Wings are beginning to align themselves properly in the hockey universe. It appears they are on a collision course to meet for a second consecutive time in the battle for the sport's Holy Grail. I picked the Canes and the Hawks, but I bet with my heart on those series, and as I have been told many many times do not bet with your heart.
Can we learn from the past? Remember back to the 1983 final. Islanders vs Oilers.. The Islanders were the class of the NHL, having reeled off three consecutive championships heading into the 83 final against the young Oilers.
Veterans llike Potvin, Bossy, Trottier and Battlin' netminder Billy Smith, the Islanders easily disposed of Gretzky, Messier and the Oilers in four consecutive games, outscoring them by a 17-6 margin.
But the Oilers learned from the butt-kicking they took, and, 12 months later, they would have the last laugh, capturing the 1984 title by dumping the Isles in five games, snapping New York's impressive run of four consecutive Stanley Cups.
One dynasty ended, another started. Now, could it be the Penguins turn, it's possible.
Pens-Wings Part 2. The parallels with that Oilers-Isles matchup are far too obvious to ignore.
A year ago, the Wings won their fourth Stanley Cup in 11 years by beating the Pens in six games. The Pens were forced to watch the Wings skate around Mellon Arena carrying the silver cup. I'm sure after that they were hoping to get another shot at the Wings. I believe they will get their wish.
The Hurricanes are down 3 games to none and after there 6-2 loss to the Pens in Game 3 it does not look good at all. They need a miracle and I mean a miracle. I know Crosby is saying "This series isn't over yet". He is just being nice. The Cane's might win Tuesday night to avoid the sweep, but they have just ran out of gas.
Malkin and Crosby have combined for 14 points in the first three games.
In the Western Conference final, the Wings took a stranglehold by crushing the hawks 6-1 on Sunday afternoon. Not a great game for NBC to be showing, unless your a Wings fan. The Wings lead 3-1 in that series and should rap it up at the Joe..
Now if it plays out the way I have said, the Wings will be the Islanders, an experienced team led by Zetterberg,Linstrom and Osgood. The Pens are the modern-day Oilers, with young studs Crosby and Malkin leading the way like Gretzky and Messier. Can the Pens follow in the Oilers footsteps and upset the old men? I think so, all I know it will be one heck of a series.
I can't wait for the Kings 2009-2010 season Let's hear it for HOCKEY, HOCKEY, HOCKEY!
