The RiverKings won over the Thunder last night at the DCC. No shock there. The Thunder are so bad this year I doubt the RiverKings had to break a sweat. The RiverKings won, 5-3, though without the help of referee Tom Steinel the score would have been 5-1. Maybe even 6-1, since I didn't have a good angle on the goal they called off. Who knows what the final result would have been if it hadn't been for his meddling in the third period. I was beginning to think that he just forgot to put his contacts back in after the second intermission, but it takes a lot more than blindness to muck things up that well.
Despite Steinel's help, the Thunder just couldn't get it together. Since the outcome didn't surprise anyone, I'll go over a couple of other interesting bits. There were an impressive number of fans at the game last night. The RiverKings are no longer in the attendance cellar, and I hope the numbers continue to rise. Now that they've clinched a playoff birth, I'm sure ticket sales will increase. I think locals from DeSoto county are beginning to realize that hockey is entertaining and the RiverKings are a very affordable, fun night out. And I think anyone in Memphis who had his feelings hurt over the name change is over it and is just enjoying the team, no matter who they belong to.
One other thing of note last night was the burger eating contest. I admit, I just don't get it. These three guys subjected themselves to inhuman stomach pains just to wind up on the Kooky Canuck hall of fame. Look at that picture and tell me they don't look sick. Who in their right mind would want to eat a 7 pound hamburger? Now in all fairness, I'm sure the Kooky Canuck does a mean job making burgers. My husband works up in Memphis and loves eating there. He's never tackled the Kookamunga, but he really digs their four cheese burger. I might get around to heading up there sometime soon to try out their veggie burger. And I confess, as a vegetarian, the thought of 7 pounds of ground beef makes me queasy. But you could offer me 7 pounds of Ben & Jerry's, and I'd have to pass it up. There is not enough Pepto Bismol in the county to make that worth it. So more power to these three brave souls, who by the way weren't able to finish during the game, but I'm sure they're paying for what they did manage to get down today.
