Let's hear it for HOCKEY, HOCKEY, HOCKEY!

Joe Sports - Blogs about the RiverKings in the Central Hockey League and the hockey world.

Hey, y’all! I’ll be gone for the next two weeks. I did not die. I am alive. I am on vacation and I am without satellite, television or even a fully functional cell signal. Right now I am typing in this entry from a Burger King parking lot.

Seems like forever since the playoffs and I don't know about you, but I can't wait for RiverKings 2009/2010 hockey season to start.October where are you?

The Kings organization had absolutely an amazing season. Can we make it two in a row and cap it off with the Presidents Cup?

So let's look to this upcoming year. What exactly do we have to look forward to? We've got some great hockey players on this team. We've got players who have proven to themselves that they can do it.

We have a coach who has signed a three year deal. That is great news for RiverKing fans. Some changes will come, but I believe the changes Kaminski makes will better the team. Let's wait and see.

Let's look at the NHL Playoffs.

If you do not like the Stanley Cup playoffs then you are not a true sports fan....period.

It seems like weeks, doesn’t it, since the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals battled in a thrilling playoff series.? The conference finals, by comparison, have been DULL, DULL DULL.

The stars, make that superstars on the Penguins and Wings are beginning to align themselves properly in the hockey universe. It appears they are on a collision course to meet for a second consecutive time in the battle for the sport's Holy Grail. I picked the Canes and the Hawks, but I bet with my heart on those series, and as I have been told many many times do not bet with your heart.

Can we learn from the past? Remember back to the 1983 final. Islanders vs Oilers.. The Islanders were the class of the NHL, having reeled off three consecutive championships heading into the 83 final against the young Oilers.

Veterans llike Potvin, Bossy, Trottier and Battlin' netminder Billy Smith, the Islanders easily disposed of Gretzky, Messier and the Oilers in four consecutive games, outscoring them by a 17-6 margin.

One_smith03

But the Oilers learned from the butt-kicking they took, and, 12 months later, they would have the last laugh, capturing the 1984 title by dumping the Isles in five games, snapping New York's impressive run of four consecutive Stanley Cups.

One dynasty ended, another started. Now, could it be the Penguins turn, it's possible.

Pens-Wings Part 2. The parallels with that Oilers-Isles matchup are far too obvious to ignore.

A year ago, the Wings won their fourth Stanley Cup in 11 years by beating the Pens in six games. The Pens were forced to watch the Wings skate around Mellon Arena carrying the silver cup. I'm sure after that they were hoping to get another shot at the Wings. I believe they will get their wish.

The Hurricanes are down 3 games to none and after there 6-2 loss to the Pens in Game 3 it does not look good at all. They need a miracle and I mean a miracle. I know Crosby is saying "This series isn't over yet". He is just being nice. The Cane's might win Tuesday night to avoid the sweep, but they have just ran out of gas.

Malkin and Crosby have combined for 14 points in the first three games.

In the Western Conference final, the Wings took a stranglehold by crushing the hawks 6-1 on Sunday afternoon. Not a great game for NBC to be showing, unless your a Wings fan. The Wings lead 3-1 in that series and should rap it up at the Joe..

Now if it plays out the way I have said, the Wings will be the Islanders, an experienced team led by Zetterberg,Linstrom and Osgood. The Pens are the modern-day Oilers, with young studs Crosby and Malkin leading the way like Gretzky and Messier. Can the Pens follow in the Oilers footsteps and upset the old men? I think so, all I know it will be one heck of a series.

I can't wait for the Kings 2009-2010 season Let's hear it for HOCKEY, HOCKEY, HOCKEY!

Kings Update/Kaminski re-signs !!

Joe Sports - Blogs about the RiverKings in the Central Hockey League and the hockey world.

Just a quick update folks - This is great for the Kings, Kaminski signs a three year deal.

Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Kevin Kaminski has been given a three-year contract to continue in his current position. Way to go Kevin.

Veteran players Landmesser and Dumont have been signed for the 2009-2010 season. Terms of the deals were not disclosed.

Elsewhere in the CHL

The Odessa Jackalopes completed a pair of trades that were made earlier this past season for "future considerations" acquiring goaltender Scott Reid from Rocky Mountain and defenseman JR Bria from Bossier-Shreveport.

The acquisition of Reid completes the Jackalopes trade of Chris Brannen to Rocky Mountain before the season began. Last season, Reid appeared in 37 games for the Rage going 18-14-4 with a 3.63 goals against average and a .892 save percentage. This past season was Reid’s eighth in pro hockey. He’s been a member of the Rocky Mountain Rage for the past two years, but has also played for New Mexico, Corpus Christi, San Angelo, and San Antonio in the CHL over his career. Reid played two seasons at the AHL level with Milwaukee, Peoria, and Norfolk from 2005 to 2007.

On November 5th of this season forward Mark Johnson, was traded to the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs for future considerations. The Mudbugs completed the trade by sending Odessa the rights to defenseman JR Bria. Bria played in 62 games this season for Bossier-Shreveport scoring two goals and 14 assists for 16 points. He also finished the year with a +15 rating.

The Laredo Bucks announced that Brent Cullaton has retired from professional hockey after 12 seasons. Cullaton, who Captained the Bucks to two President's Cup Championships in 2004 and 2006, returned to play for Laredo in February thanks to a trade with Rocky Mountain.

Cullaton has been named the Head Coach for the Boulder Jr. Bisons of the Western States Hockey League (WSHL).

Tulsa new coach is tough !! This is a great fight, now only if he could get the Oilers to play this tough.

Markusen off to Oiler Country !!

Joe Sports - Blogs about the RiverKings in the Central Hockey League and the hockey world.

I haven't been posting here for a while as I've been having too much fun (if you want to call it that) catching up on sleep and general life since the Kings finished their season. Oh ya, I've been golfing a lot.

Well, there has been some movement already from coach Kaminski. They have sent defenseman Joe Markusen to the Tulsa Oilers to complete a trade made earlier this year that brought forward Martin Gascon from Tulsa to the RiverKings for a player to be named later. Hate to see Joe go, but isn't that the life of a hockey player?

Around the CHL

The Tulsa Oilers have named 40 year old Bruce Ramsay their new head coach.

Ramsay comes to the Oilers after the past three seasons coaching the Muskegon Fury of the International Hockey League where he had nearly a .600 winning percentage (127-82-19). He brings a wealth of championship experience, having won 10 championships as a player, and he also is familiar with the Central Hockey League, having played for the Wichita Thunder in the 2000-01 season.

Here's the story on that one.

http://www.tulsaworld.com/sports/article.aspx?subjectid=29&articleid=20090520_29_B1_NewTul335130

The Laredo Bucks announced Tuesday that they have completed two future considerations trades with Rocky Mountain and Oklahoma City from earlier this season.

The Bucks have sent goaltender Andrew Martin to the Rage to complete the February Brent Cullaton trade, and have traded forward Matt Miller to the Blazers to complete the October Jaye Judd deal.

It was mid-summer before the Amarillo Gorillas made their first player signing last season. Under Head Coach Brian Pellerin in 2009-10, the Gorillas franchise wasted no time in re-signing a staple of the Texas Panhandle community. Austin Sutter, who captured the 2008-09 CHL Man of the Year award (given to the player who exemplifies the strongest leadership qualities both on and off the ice), has signed with the Gorillas for the 2009-10 season.

McClelland earns his keep. There is an article on that at the CHL site. Too bad, I thought he would get fired, I guess Stewart wants to pull his strings for one more year. The story is at this link.

http://www.centralhockeyleague.com/pressroom/news/index.html?article_id=3468

One week after clinching the franchise’s first Central Hockey League title, the Texas Brahmas made early additions to their roster as they acquired Chris Shaffer and Jamie McKinven from trade commitments during the 2008-09 season.

The Allen Americans, the newest Central Hockey League (CHL) franchise, announced the staff that will guide the team’s on-ice efforts during their inaugural 2009-10 season. American’s President Steve Duchesne made the announcement.

The staff will be comprised of Dwight Mullins as the team’s head coach and general manager and Bill McDonald as the team’s associate coach and director of hockey operation.

The Rapid City Rush announced the first signings of the 2009 off- season. After an inaugural season full of success, the Rush welcome back two key elements in forwards Rich Hansen and Derek LeBlanc.

Also the Rapid City Rush signed netminder Miguel Beaudry for the 2009-10 season. Last season, Beaudry posted a 16-20-6 record with a 3.3 goals-against average (GAA) and .904 save percentage (sv %).

There's less than one week left in the bidding for Andrew Penner's goalie mask from this past season; bidding in the online auction ends at 9 a.m. (MST) on Friday, May 22. All proceeds from the auction are tax-deductible and will benefit Breast Cancer research and awareness. What a super idea... now go out and bid on it for a great cause.

The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees of the Central Hockey League (CHL) today announced that the team has acquired the rights to three players to complete a pair of trades during the 2008-09 season.

RGV acquired the rights to forward Kyle Sheen and goaltender Lanny Ramage, both of whom played for the Rapid City Rush last season.

The Killer Bees also acquired the rights to defenseman Nick Harloff from the Rocky Mountain Rage. All three acquisitions complete future consideration picks that were part of trades involving Travis Banga (Sheen and Harloff) and the rights to Josh Bonar (Ramage).

NHL Playoffs

The Hawks put up a huge fight, for sure, and deserve a lot of credit for the closeness of last nights game. Mikael Samuelsson scored 5:14 into overtime, lifting the Detroit Red Wings to a 3-2 win over the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday night and a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference finals.

If they don’t get disheartened by this loss (doubtful they will), the games in Chicago will be epic. Go Hawks go. I really dislike the Wings.

Two of the league’s hottest teams are in a classic series. The star power is what really stands out. Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Marc-Andre Fleury versus Eric Staal and Cam Ward. The Penguins have more star players, but the true x-factor in this series will be Cam Ward. A 2006 Stanley Cup champion and Conn Smythe trophy winner,

Ward is the definition of a playoff goalie. He has yet to lose a playoff series in his young career, and this could prove to be the Penguins downfall. I like Marc-Andre Fleury, but I beleive Ward has the potential to steal this series while Fleury does not.

Give Carolina an advantage between the pipes. Carolina has been on a magical run this spring. Cam Ward and Eric Staal have been nothing short of spectacular.

The Canes lost the first game of a playoff series. No big deal to the Carolina Hurricanes. They trail Pittsburgh 1-0 in the Eastern Conference final, but they've won each of the last five series in which they dropped the opener. Go Canes Go !!

Shall I now predict the future. WHO WILL GET THE COYOTES ?

Jimmy will be able to buy the Coyotes and move them to Hamilton Ontario. Call them the Hamilton Pirates. Pay the Leafs a one-time $100million "I can play here too you know" tax and last but not least give Gary and the Board of Governors all new Blackberries and a 10 min lesson on how to run a successful business. Bettman is a jerk and I do not know why the NHL keeps him around.

Well that's it for now. Have a great day.

Bad news for Bugs, CHL and hockey Fans !!

Joe Sports - Blogs about the RiverKings in the Central Hockey League and the hockey world.

It didn't take me long to get back to my Blog. Here's some bad news out of Bugs country.

Madden will fold Mudbugs if no buyer is found

By Roy Lang III • rflang@gannett.com • May 4, 2009

Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs general manager Ray Delia announced Monday owner John Madden would shut the 12-year-old franchise down if a buyer is not found immediately.

"It’s the economy first and foremost, but my family too," Madden told The Times late this afternoon. "I sure missed a lot of events. That never comes back to you. It’s just a culmination of a lot of things."

The Central Hockey League has given Madden a soft deadline of May 15 to submit possible dates for 2009-10 scheduling. That seems to be the deadline for Madden and hockey in Bossier-Shreveport, too.

"We’ll begin limiting our operations internally," said Delia, who approximated Madden's loss since 2002 at $1 million "The Central Hockey League requires a commitment this month to begin scheduling for the upcoming 2009-10 season. I don’t believe Mr. Madden will be willing to make a commitment to 2009-10 unless he is engaged in a legitimate buy-sell conversation with a prospective owner."

Madden was a conspicuous no-show for the Monday's news conference he called. Delia said Madden's asking price is "market value." Delia said the past few CHL franchises have sold from $1.5 to $3 million.

Madden bought the Mudbugs in 2002 from the team's original owner, Michael Plaman. Twice, during Madden's ownership, the Mudbugs reached the President's Cup Finals. He sold half of the team to Rob Walker in 2004 before buying it back recently. Madden has also been looking for potential buyers for the last two years, including area Pro golfer David Toms. Toms declined the offer last week.

"There is not an owner in the Central Hockey League who can’t wait to look at the bottom line tomorrow. It’s a tough row to hoe," Mudbugs head coach Scott Muscutt said. "Owners, just like players and just like coaches, do what they do because they love it – to provide something for their community to take pride in and get involved in. No one is getting rich. The owners in most cases are taking hits.

"I’m not going to blame John Madden. The numbers have never looked pretty. It just didn’t sneak up on us. I think John sat down and said, ‘I don’t have the passion for this like I used to. I don’t love this like I used to.’"

"It happens to a lot of people. When it happens to the guy writing the checks, it affects a lot of people."

Wow, I did not see that coming. Let's hope they can find a buyer.

President's Cup Final

Texas leads Colorado 2-1 in the best of seven series. Game four goes tonight at 7:05 pm - NYTEX Sports Center. Boy, the Eagles are a frustrated bunch, they sure take a lot of stupid penalties. They get really mad when they get hit. ( Go figure) Go Texas Go !! You can catch the game on CHL-TV.

The Season Is Over !!

Joe Sports - Blogs about the RiverKings in the Central Hockey League and the hockey world.

Thank you

I can't believe the 2008/2009 season is over. That means I'm another year older. Boy, time flew by this season. But what a season it was.

Most of the players could be wearing Kings jerseys again next season, but some veterans could be playing elsewhere.

Less than 72 hours after their elimination from the CHL playoffs, Kings players will be moving their gear out of the locker room at the DCC.

It would be better if it were in May sometime and you've just won the cup. It's so disappointing that the Kings were only two wins away from going to the Presidents Cup.

Players and coaches will look back on a season that included both good stretches and bad.

Flashback- Rewind

I’d like to take a bit of time to look back on the year that was, and it was a hell of a year.

Looking back, the Kings first goal was to finish first in the regular season.. We spent a lot of emotion finishing first. Sometimes, when you put that much emphasis in finishing first, the team feels that they achieved their goal and don’t have anything left to go to the next level.

When the playoffs started, I thought we started a little slow versus the Blazers. Our goaltending was not up to par, but the boys came through and won in six games versus the Blazers. We got to the Blazers tandem of netminders.

Colorado, they had a hot netminder. We didn't. Now don't get me wrong, Sims played extremly well in his two games. The kid only played 14 regular season games. Our number one netminder Beech was not up to par in the post season. He wasn't himself in the Blazers or Eagles series.

Against the Eagles, the team wasn't able to produce goals, like they did in the regular season. Of course one reason for that was goaltender Penner. I still believe we have the better team, but Penner was the difference. The shot totals tell you a lot. We just couldn't beat him and that is why they are playing in the Presidents Cup.

The Kings had a regular season record of 4 4-17-3 over 64 games of the 2008/2009 calendar. That’s a 91 point year - a record that put them second overall in the season. Not to shabby I would say.

Players:

Martin Gascon 68 points

Louis Dumont 65 points

Garrett Larson 61 points

Jeff Nelson 58 points

Matt Summers 54 points

Bobby Chaumont 51 points

I could go on and on. We had one of the best offensive units in the league. On any given night, one of the three lines pulled through.

We had one of the best defenses in the league, allowing only on average 25 shots per game.

MVP:

My pick for the season is Louis Dumont. He inspired the fans, he worked hard on every shift and he was always hitting someone. He's beaten away the dark cloud that had hung over this team ever since our Championship seasons and the future looks bright for the first time in a while. He could probably run for mayor right now, frankly.

Most Helpful:

My pick for the season is probably the best playmaker for the Kings, Jeff Nelson ( 39 assists). If he could add 20 goals in a season, he'd be among the best in the league. But nobody is sweating it, because Nelson makes everybody else on the Kings team better whenever he's on the ice. The Nelson, Margeson, Summers line was just awesome in the post season. We should have had them together sooner.

Best Defensemen:

A tie between Jeff Alcombrack and Andrew Lackner. Jeff was his usual stalwart self. This season he finished with 49 points. As for Lackner, he was an absolute rock defensively and he stepped it up in the post season also. He was everything the Kings hoped he'd be when they signed him.

Unsung Hero:

It's gotta be Stephen Margeson. From Defense to Offense - where ever Kaminski put him, he did his job. His work ethic was unreal. His hits were fun to watch, he punished his opponents every time he stepped on the ice. His competitiveness rubbed off on his team, and his dominant play night in and night out gave the team confidence we haven't seen on a RiverKings team in a while. The other teams did not like Margeson. Public enemy number one in Colorado and OKC.

The line of Nelson/Summers/Margeson was magic in the playoffs. On top of that he's a leader on and off the ice. He's a hometown guy, well he will be as he's getting married in Southhaven in June.

Best Game:

Game 4 of the Nothern Conference final, the Kings were on the verge of elimination. The Colorado Eagles had a 3-0 stranglehold in the series. But folks, the RiverKings would not give up.

The overtime hero was Matt Summers as he scored at 3:46 of the double overtime.

"It feels great. I don’t think the best team has won all series, and the best team finally won a game," Summers said. "I don’t know how many heroes there are; it’s everyone. I don’t know the number, but every (gosh) darn guy on the team.

"We felt her coming all night. We had a lot of chances in the first OT, but we didn’t get frustrated. We didn’t get down on ourselves. We kept coming and (Stephen) Margeson – what a beauty pass he gave me. It couldn’t have been any better."

Colorado scored four first period goals. Things looked pretty bleak for the Kings at that point.

Head Coach Kevin Kaminski pulled, Kevin Beech, in favor of Tyler Sims who has seen no post-season action in his career. That seemed to ignite the Kings as Matt Summers scored at 18:44. Landmesser and Nelson assisted on the goal. It was 4-1 Eagles after twenty minutes of play.

In the second period Stephen Margeson beat Penner at 8:42 on the powerplay. Summers and Landmesser assisted. It was 4-2 Eagles. The Eagles quickly answered Margeson's goal at 11:04.

But the never say die Kings scored again to close the gap at 19:10 as Martin Gascon found the back of the net and it was 5-3 Eagles after forty minutes of play. Chaumont and Steward assisted on Gascon's goal.

The third period was all RiverKings as Jeff Alcombrack scored at the 4:18 mark. Jeff's goal was assisted by Nelson and Margeson. Then the comeback was completed as Andrew Lackner took a blistering shot from the point that beat Penner at 15:09. Chaumont and Dumont assisted. It was tied at five after sixty minutes.

Then it was sudden death overtime. First goal wins.

There was tons of scoring chances in the first overtime period, but Penner and Sims both stood on their heads. Sims stopped 11 shots and Penner stopped 16 shots. It was still 5-5 after the fourth period.

In the second overtime period Margeson fed Summers a perfect pass and Summers scored his second goal of the night and the game winner at 3:46. The Kings win 6-5. That was the best game of the year.

It was unbelievable – to be able to see that game live. Even today people think of it as one of the greatest games the Kings have ever played.

To be a part of that; to be on the ice and to be able to play in a game like that must have been very nerve-racking for the players, but it was very exciting, with the atmosphere. The building was electric. Perhaps a little more so, because it was a game that had to be won by the Kings. It was a great experience for fans, but most of all for the players and coach because when you’re done playing or coaching you keep memories like that.

Best Moment:

How cool was it when we won 11 games in a row? February Friday the 13th. - March the 7th. Wow that was a run.

Best Chant:

Louiiie-Louiiie.

Best Coach:

He was the best coach in Kings fans eyes, but he also was the best coach in the CHL.

Head Coach Kevin Kaminski has been selected the recipient of the 2008-09 Central Hockey League Coach of the Year award following balloting among all 16 CHL Head Coaches. The award is presented annually to the Central Hockey League coach judged to have contributed most to his team’s success.

In his first season with the RiverKings, Kaminski earned 10 of 16 first place votes and appeared on all possible ballots (coaches could not vote for themselves).

Great work this year Kevin and I'm sure hoping you're here for the 2009/ 2010 season.

Dumbest move of the season:

Telling us we are getting a new web site, during the Kings/ Eagles series.

Mississippi hockey fans can look forward to a new and improved RiverKings face gracing the World Wide Web soon after the final whistle curtains the end of the 2008-09 Central Hockey League season. The RiverKings have announced they will soon be unveiling a new-look web site at the team’s Internet address, www.riverkings.com.

"This is a very exciting time for us," RiverKings Director of Business Operations Ab Mattice said. "We have made so much progress this year, both on the ice and off, and we feel this web site is the new face of that positive change."

Most Dissapointing:

The attendance at the DCC. 2,992 was the average. It was way below that for the playoffs. Hopefully there is a new marketing strategy for the 2009/2010 season. We have to put bums in the seats at the DCC. I know if they hire the right person it can be done.

The Kings have certainly come a long way in a short while. They've reinvented themselves into a responsible, hard working, defense first team. They've set regular season records and had their most successful playoff since the championship years. They've exorcised the demons that have hung over this team. Most of all, they've captured the imagination of Mississippi and Memphis and instilled it with a hope we haven't had in a long time.

It's a great accomplishment, no doubt. Now their job is to put together a team for the 2009/2010 season. Expectations will be high, the fans will be demanding a Presidents Cup.

For now, though, it's back to the phones and making deals with players for Kaminski.

Will there be any major changes? No, I don’t think so.

We had a good season, so I don’t think that there’s any need to make alot of changes technically.

But, some players will be off to Europe, some might retire and Kaminski might change a few players to make this team even better.

One thing we will probably have to do...the vet limit...some guys are vets and some are going to have vet status for next season. That will put us over the limit, so we have to let some players go. We do have a lot of older players, will they retire?

Eagles finish off Kings/ Kings going home early

Joe Sports - Blogs about the RiverKings in the Central Hockey League and the hockey world

Eagles 5 KINGS2

"A garbage goal wins it for them," Mississippi coach Kevin Kaminski said. "That’s the kind of breaks that seemed to have happened for them. It’s a tough pill to swallow."

The Kings had arrived at Sunday night's game as a team trying to make history. If they had won Sunday's game 6 and Monday's game 7 they would have become the first team in league history to erase a 3-0 deficit and win a series.

Only three had succeeded in the big leagues - hockey's 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs and 1975 New York Islanders, and baseball's 2004 Boston Red Sox.

Well, I'm here in Colorado, feeling depressed after last night's loss to Colorado in game 6. The final 5-2 Eagles, but I am sure proud of this team, they played their hearts out. I've said it all along in this series, I still think, no let me rephrase that (I know) the Kings are the better hockey team.

Penner was the difference in this series. Give credit where credit is due. The guy was amazing. As they say in playoff hockey, a hot goaltender will take you a long way and that is why the Eagles are in the President's Cup Final versus Texas. I hate to say this , but Go Texas Go. I dislike Wildfong, but I can't stand the puppet Kevin McClelland.

Let's get into last night's game.

It was a hard hitting affair and a very fast first period, both teams had great scoring chances. The Kings out shot the Eagles 14-10. Both Penner and Sims stood tall between the pipes, both netminders made some spectacular saves.

It was 0-0 after twenty minutes of play. The Kings drew first blood in the second period as Bobby Chaumont beat Penner at 4:10 of the second frame. Dumont and Larson assisted on the goal. The Eagles responded at 9:43 on the powerplay, Schneekloth found the back of the net and it was tied at one. It was 1-1 after forty minutes of play.

The third period was all Eagles as they scored four goals. Brett Hammond scored at 5:53. Then only 27 seconds later, Greg Pankewicz's ( the man with no brain) scored the eventual game-winner.

Kings center Jeff Nelson cut into the Eagles' lead as he beat Penner at 14:44. The Eagles put the icing on the cake at 15:29 as Adam Hogg scored and it was 4-2 Eagles.

The Kings pulled Sims with over two minutes to go. They had great scoring chances, but again Penner closed the door on them. Colorado's Ulanski's closed out the game's scoring on an empty-net goal with 31.4 seconds left in the third period. The final 5-2 Eagles.

The Kings were 0 for 7 on the powerplay ( That really hurt again, especially on the 5 on 3). The Eagles were 2 for 6.The Kings outshot Colorado 32-31.Netminder Tyler Sims stopped 26 of 30 shots directed his way. Eagles netminder Andrew Penner stopped 30 of 32 shots directed his way.

The Eagles will now host the Texas Brahmas in the President's Cup finals. Games 1 and 2 will be played at the Budweiser Events Center on Wednesday, April 28 and Friday, May 1.

Great season Kings! I'll be back later this week and I'll have a look at the Kings 2008/2009 season.

My shots from the last home game of the season

I was all set to rant and rave about some recent management decisions, but I'll save that for another day.  I'm so bummed that the Kings couldn't dominate in Colorado last night, that I've decided to dump my original write up that focused too much on the off-ice RiverKings drama (hard not to focus on it), and just post my favorite photos from Friday night.  Enjoy, and start counting the days til hockey season.

The game started off with cops falling from the sky in a pretty neat display.

Maybe the front office staff should concentrate more on selling tickets and spend a little less time pissing people off.  Oops, sorry, the negative bled through.  Let me get back to the fun stuff.

Hope you enjoyed the photos.  And be sure to keep an ear to the ground this summer for more news about the upcoming Ole Miss hockey to be played at the DCC.  Have a good off season, and I'll see you back at the DCC in October.

Staying Alive, Staying Alive/Kings Playoff Gameday: Game 6 vs. Eagles

Joe Sports - Blogs about the RiverKings in the Central Hockey League and the hockey world

KINGS 6 Eagles 2

Hello from Colorado, I boarded a plane yesterday and did not have time to do a re-cap of Friday's super game. The Kings are still alive as they beat up on the Eagles Friday night. The final was 6-2 Kings. The Eagles still have a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series. Game 6 is tonight at the Budweiser Events Center.Game time is at 8 p.m.

I have to give credit to Tyler Sims, he replaced starter Kevin Beech after the Eagles took a 4-0 lead in Game 4 and as you all know we came back in that one to win in double overtime and Sims played really well. Then Sims made his first start of the post season, stopping 28 of 30 shots directed his way on Friday night. Good work Sims, way to step up.

"It's very exciting," Kaminski said. "We've played very well this whole series, but bounces didn't come our way (early on). We've stayed poised and have had that composure. You just never know what bounce is going to turn things around."

On Friday night, the Kings powerplay finally got on track as the Kings scored four powerplay goals.

Stephen Margeson opened the scoring for the Kings on the powerplay as he fired a shot by Penner at the 8:53 mark of the first period. Summers gave Margeson a perfect pass from behind the net. Nelson also assisted on the goal. The lead was short lived as Eagles, Riley Nelson beat Sims at 10.22 and it was tied at one. But the Kings responded to Nelson's goal as Darrell Stoddard scored at 17:19. Steward and Simoes assisted on that one. It was 2-1 Kings after one.

Bobby Chaumont made it a 3-1 at 13.41 of the second period. Dumont and Larson assisted. It was still 3-1 after forty minutes of play.

In the third the Kings took over, they dominated the third period, first it was Lackner beating Penner on the powerplay at 3:03. Summers and Steward assisted. It was 4-1 Kings. Eagles, Haddon scored at 8:43 to close the gap. But the Kings again responded with two powerplay goals. First it was Gascon beating Penner at 17:11 on the powerplay. Stoddard and Markusen had the assists on Gascon's goal.

The Kings would score again at 18:07 as Summers beat Penner and it was 6-2 Kings. Steward and Lackner got the assists. The final 6-2 Kings.

Seriously folks, the Kings played one hell of a game and that's why were here in Colorado for game 6. Jeff Alcombrack did not play from about the midway point of the second period. He has an upper body injury. I have not heard if he'll be able to play tonight. Margeson filled in for him on defense.

Kings Playoff Gameday: Game 6 vs. Eagles

Bring it on

KINGS vs Eagles

Let's get ready for some hockey, game time tonight is 8:00pm Central time.

Who will get the start- Sims or Beech - Penner or Cey.

McClelland wouldn't say whether he's considering sitting Penner for Morgan Cey, who hasn't seen action during the playoffs.

"We'll discuss all options," McClelland said. "And reveal all things (today) to our hockey team."

McClelland wouldn't say which goalie he expected his team to face tonight.

"That's his decision," McClelland said of Mississippi coach Kevin Kaminski.

Oh boy it's going to be a good one.

"We got up 3-0, but they got back into it," Eagles coach Kevin McClelland said Saturday afternoon as the team was driving from Denver International Airport after taking a flight to Colorado. "Now we've got to make sure we protect home ice." Not tonight Kevin or Monday night..

It did take a long time, to solve Penner. He's a heck of a goalie. Now all we have to do is find a way to win Game 6 in their building and put pressure back on them.

As I have said, I believe we can win four straight. One game at a time. The first two are out of the way, let's get number 3 tonight.

The Kings know they can win in Colorado because they've done it before. The bottom line is that the better team wins in a seven-game series and the Kings are the better team. In the first three games, Penner stood on his head, with-out Penner in those three games, this series would have been over.

Oddsmakers are picking Colorado, let's prove them wrong once again boys.

Well were on the brink of elimination again tonight. We've been on that the last two games. The Kings' will be pulling out all the stops to make this season continue again tonight at the BEC and I know the RiverKings will not go down tonight without a fight.

The Kings are a talented group of players. Again, one shift and one game at a time!

Get out your lucky ? Horseshoes, Four Leaf Clover, Rabbit's Foot.

What does 2009 hold for the Kings? The answer comes tonight.

Pick any cliché you want:

Separate the men from the boys

Do or die

Backs against the wall

Final strokes

Their magic number is four

They need to get a win in their building

They're in a must-win situation

If you lose, you go home,They’re down but not out.

As I have said for the last two games. Make history or we are history boys.

Good luck tonight boys, I'll be screaming my head off for you. Go out and kick some Eagle butt. Have a great day and enjoy the game. GO KINGS GO !!

I know, that's a bunch of crap, but hey Colorado gets what they want. If you have the Altitude channel it will be broadcasted there. I got an e-mail this morning saying that the Fox and Hound in Southaven has the Altitude channel.

Wow, talk about a team that didn't show up for a game 7. The Brahmas spanked the Odessa Jackalopes 8-1. Ouch !!

Another must-win situation/Kings Playoff Gameday: Game 5 vs. Eagles

Joe Sports - Blogs about the RiverKings in the Central Hockey League and the hockey world.

KINGSEAGLES

RIVERKINGS VS Eagles

What can I say, not much, I'm just glad we have another game. This will be my easiest game day blog to write - It's a carbon copy of yesterdays blog or most of it is. Why change anything up now. It worked yesterday so why not today.

It's hockey night again at the DCC. These back to backs cause hell with the social life I pretend to have.

So what will the two teams do for an encore?

The Kings wiil be fighting to extend their season once again as they take on the Colorado Eagles tonight at the DCC for Game 5 of their Northern Conference playoff series.

It ain't over 'til it's over and the fat lady didn't sing. In a must-win situation, the Kings rallied from four goals down in the first period to beat the Colorado Eagles 6-5 in double overtime on Thursday night..

Entering game 5, the Kings are still on the verge of elimination. The Colorado Eagles still have a 3-1 stranglehold in the series.

Last night's overtime hero was Matt Summers as he scored at 3:46 of the double overtime.

No team likes to be on the brink of elimination, but sometimes that can also bring out the best in a team. It sure did last night and let's hope it continues tonight.

The Kings' will be pulling out all the stops to make this season continue. I can tell you this much, the RiverKings will not go down tonight without a fight. Tonight they'll have to bring their "AA" game.

This is a talented group of players. They know they match up well with the Colorado Eagles. Get in Penners head. Again, one shift and one game at a time!

Get out your lucky ? Horseshoes, Four Leaf Clover, Rabbit's Foot.

RIVERKINGS 6 Eagles 5 (2OT)

Marge

It ain't over 'til it's over and the fat lady didn't sing. In a must-win situation, the RiverKings fans were rewarded for their faithful support with the biggest comeback win in team's history. The Kings rallied from four goals down in the first period to beat the Colorado Eagles 6-5 in double overtime.

I don't think a lot of people expected it after being down four goals in the first period. Nearly an hour after the game, I was trying to digest what I had just witnessed at the DCC. IT WAS UNBELIEVABLE .

When I finally got home, I actually turned on the computer, put on Nifty -TV and watched the game again. The live game was 3 hours and 50 minutes long and so was the replay. So I had my fill of hockey on Thursday night.

Entering game 4, the Kings were on the verge of elimination.

Colorado scored four first period goals, scoring for the Eagles were Pankewicz, Nelson, Reeder and Hammond. It was 4-0 Eagles at16:42 of the first frame.

The Eagles quickly answered Margeson's goal as Ed McGrane found the twine at 11:04.

The Kings win 6-5 and the two teams will do all again tonight.

The Kings won the special teams battle last night, as Colorado was 0 for 8 on the powerplay. The Kings were 3 for 8.

Penner stopped 57 of 63 shots directed his way. Sims stopped 34 of 35 shots directed his way.

I'll be back later today with my game report.

Thursday's scoreboard

Colorado 5 at Mississippi 6 (Playoff Gm. 4, 2OT) Eagles leads series 3-1.

Texas 0 at Odessa 2 (Playoff Gm. 6) Series tied at 3 -3
